RESOURCES – When to Contact Your Doula

IN THE DAY (6:00AM – 10:00PM)

After 37 weeks, I will likely be in close contact with you. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  Please call, text or e-mail after a prenatal appointment to update with anything you might feel important.

If you think you are in labour, or are experiencing contractions call as soon as you can. Even if your water breaks, and you are not having contractions. If you believe you are in labour but are not ready for my support yet, we will keep in touch, roughly every 2-4 hours to see how things are progressing and to offer suggestions.

IN THE NIGHT (10:00PM – 6:00AM)

If you are able to handle your contractions easily, do your best to try and sleep through them or even between them. This is one of the best things you can do since it may be awhile before you are able to sleep again.

Please only call in the middle of the night when you are ready for myself to come, are feeling anxious, or if you feel like something is urgent. I wouldn’t want you sitting at home feeling like you can’t call.

WHEN WILL I JOIN YOU?

I will join you at your home when you feel that labour is picking up, getting intense and/or you need more support.  This is typically when contractions have been consistent for an hour, 4-5 minutes apart, lasting a up to a minute (also referred to as the 5-1-1 or 4-1-1 rule). However, your emotional state is more important than the frequency of your contractions. Ultimately, I will come when you feel that you need more support and/or have a conversation with you on the phone about available options.

If you decide to head to the hospital or birth centre before before I join you at your home, I  will simply meet you there.
